Slangenburg Castle restoration

Since 2023, Stichting Monumentenbezit, owner of Slangenburg Castle, has also been in charge of its management. Monumentenbezit finds it important that as many people as possible can experience the castle and therefore no longer wants to rent it out exclusively.

In order to restore Slangenburg to its former glory, a restoration and maintenance plan is being developed. Various (building) historical investigations are being carried out. The results will be used to draw up a plan of action for the entire castle grounds.

Preservation

Building sustainability

Along with the planned restoration, there will be heavy investment in making the castle, The Coach House and the castle cottages more sustainable. Exactly what measures can be taken is not yet clear. As soon as more is known, you can read about it here.

The collection

Monument Property has also taken over the contents of the main house. For this, of course, what belongs to the castle stays with the castle. In particular, the Slangenburg collection consists of furniture, paintings, books and crockery. To manage the collection and open the castle, the foundation uses the "Manual of Housekeeping" of the British National Trust.

Together with professionals, each piece of the collection is being examined to see what restoration is needed. Monumentenbezit is also investigating how the castle can be furnished as much as possible according to the time of the last owners: the Passmann family. Pieces of furniture that were originally in Slangenburg and are now in the collection of the Cultural Heritage Agency will, if possible, be returned to the castle.

A restoration plan is now being drawn up for the paintings. However, it will not be possible to restore everything at once. The project is too big for that. The complete restoration is expected to take about ten years.

Research

Each study has its own research team with focus topics and areas of expertise.

In September 2024, two "researchers in residence" will start at Slangenburg Castle. Keep an eye on this page for news about the researchers and their work.
